Ashiko was a six-man band fronted by lead vocalist Alpheus Mofokeng, alongside members Thomas Tladi on guitar, Innocent Hala on keyboards, Diliza Maneli on keyboards, Bonakele Mbambisa on keyboards, and Skipper Shabalala on guitar. The name "Ashiko" may have been inspired by Hugh Masekela’s 1975 recording of OJ Ekemonde’s composition, which translates to "World of Time" – implying a sense of urgency. The band released their debut album, Get Ready, in 1980, followed by Gumba Fire in 1986, Umaseven in 1987, and Wachaggo Man in 1988.
