Assagai is a musical group that debuted in 1971 under Philips’ progressive subsidiary Vertigo, initially receiving quiet applause. However, as Afro-Rock began to gain traction as the 'next big thing,' critics soon became more favorable. Their brief journey through London’s predominantly progressive underground music scene led to their only appearance on Top of The Pops. The group played a significant role in the Afro-rock genre, alongside bands like Black Velvet, Osibisa, Thors Anvil, Uhuru, and the Cosmic Grass Band. They featured a diverse lineup of musicians from the South African and Nigerian communities in London, including contributions from notable figures such as Dudu Pukwana, Fred Coker, Ayinde Folarin (Demon Fuzz), and Fred Fredericks (Jimmy James and The Vagabonds). An unexpected collaboration with progressive-folk legends Jade Warrior resulted in backing for their Zimbabwe LP and co-writing for their self-titled debut. Assagai's music remains as fresh and vibrant as it was upon its release in 1971, characterized by hypnotic rhythms, punctured brass, and provocative vocals. Their distinctive sound combines powerful vibes with a straightforward narrative, reflecting the rapidly changing times in London.
