August Moon, born Alexander Randolph on August 7, 1937, in Richmond’s Southside, was a multifaceted artist known for his contributions as a dancer, singer, producer, and R&B pioneer. He joined the Navy in 1954 and later became a protégé of pioneering black DJ Allen Knight. This mentorship led him to perform on package tours alongside legendary artists such as Ruth Brown, Chuck Berry, and Fats Domino. In addition to his musical career, August owned a record store, a grocery, and a nightclub, and he built a rich catalog of soul and funk music. Throughout his career, he became a prominent figure in local talk radio and television, particularly recognized as a fiery militant voice in his hometown. For the last two decades of his life, he was known as August Moon and frequently appeared on local Richmond cable as a political commentator during the 1980s and 1990s. He recorded music under the name Mr. Wiggles in Philadelphia and New York during the 1960s and claimed to have produced records featuring a young Jimi Hendrix, although this has not been confirmed. August Moon passed away on July 12, 2023.
