August Pablo was a Jamaican reggae melodica and keyboard player, producer, and label owner, born on June 21, 1954, in St. Andrew, Jamaica. He learned to play several instruments, including piano, organ, clarinet, and xylophone, and played a significant role in popularizing the melodica in reggae music. His first recordings were made in collaboration with others who used the pseudonym "Augustus Pablo" for their B-sides, leading him to adopt the name for himself. His work was crucial in the development of dub music. Pablo ran the "Rockers Hi-Fi" sound system with his brother and was associated with several labels. In 1974, he opened the Rockers International record shop at 135 Orange Street, which was owned by his brother and a close friend known as Micko. He passed away on May 18, 1999, in Kingston, Jamaica, after a long battle with health problems related to a nerve disorder. He was also the father of a child, though the name is not specified. A 'PABLO' tag etched in the run-out area of Jamaican records often refers to productions associated with him, while a similar etching on pressings from other locations indicates a different mastering engineer.
