Augustus Pablo, born on June 21, 1954, in St. Andrew, Jamaica, was a renowned reggae melodica and keyboard player, producer, and label owner. He learned to play various instruments, including piano, organ, clarinet, and xylophone, and played a significant role in popularizing the melodica within reggae music. His early recordings involved collaboration with artists who often used the pseudonym "Augustus Pablo" for their B-sides, leading him to adopt the name for himself. Pablo's work was crucial in the development of dub music, and he ran the "Rockers Hi-Fi" sound system with his brother, contributing to several labels. In 1974, he opened the Rockers International record shop at 135 Orange Street, co-owned by his brother and his close friend, known as Micko. He passed away on May 18, 1999, in Kingston, Jamaica, after a long battle with health issues related to a nerve disorder. He was also the father of a child. In the context of Jamaican records, a 'PABLO' tag etched in the run-out area often refers to his productions, while a similar etching on pressings from other regions indicates the mastering engineer.
