Augustus "Gussie" Clarke (born 1953) is a renowned reggae producer known for his significant contributions to the Jamaican music scene, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. He began his career by cutting dub plates and made his debut as a producer in 1972 with U-Roy's "The Higher The Mountain." Clarke quickly established himself as a leading producer of deejays, with notable albums such as Big Youth's "Screaming Target" and I-Roy's "Presenting I Roy," both regarded as some of the best deejay albums ever produced. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Clarke collaborated with prominent artists like Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Augustus Pablo, Leroy Smart, and The Mighty Diamonds, including their influential track "Pass the Kouchie" in 1981. He released much of his work under his own labels and adapted to the emerging dancehall style of reggae in the late 1980s, aiming to create glossier recordings suitable for international audiences. In 1987, he released The Mighty Diamonds' "The Real Enemy," which marked the beginning of his transition to digital sounds, incorporating keyboard and computer programming into his productions. The following year, he launched his Music Works studio, which became a hub for new reggae recordings.
