Augustus "Gussie" Clarke (born 1953) is a renowned reggae producer known for his significant contributions to the Jamaican music scene, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s. He began his career by cutting dub plates and made his debut as a producer in 1972 with U-Roy's "The Higher The Mountain." Clarke quickly established himself as a leading producer of deejays, creating iconic albums such as Big Youth's "Screaming Target" and I-Roy's "Presenting I Roy," both considered among the best in the genre. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Clarke collaborated with notable artists including Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Augustus Pablo, Leroy Smart, and The Mighty Diamonds, producing influential tracks like "Pass the Kouchie" in 1981. He transitioned into the late 1980s by adapting to the emerging dancehall style, distinguishing his work with glossier recordings aimed at international audiences. In 1987, Clarke released The Mighty Diamonds' "The Real Enemy," marking the beginning of his embrace of digital sounds. His Music Works studio, launched in 1988, became a hub for the new reggae era, producing successful albums such as The Mighty Diamonds' "Get Ready" and Gregory Isaacs' "Red Rose For Gregory."
