Augustus "Gussie" Clarke (born 1953) is a renowned reggae producer known for his significant contributions to the genre, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. He began his career in the music industry by cutting dub plates and made his debut as a producer in 1972 with U-Roy's "The Higher The Mountain." Clarke quickly established himself as a leading producer of deejays, creating classic albums such as Big Youth's "Screaming Target" and I-Roy's "Presenting I Roy," both considered among the best in the deejay category. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, he collaborated with prominent artists including Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Augustus Pablo, Leroy Smart, and The Mighty Diamonds, the latter producing their influential track "Pass the Kouchie" in 1981. Much of his work was released under his own labels. In the late 1980s, Clarke adapted to the emerging dancehall style of reggae, distinguishing himself by producing recordings with a glossier sound aimed at international audiences. In 1987, he began transitioning to a digital sound with the release of The Mighty Diamonds' "The Real Enemy" and the single "Gang War," showcasing a new digi-roots style.
