Austin Wood was born in St. James, Missouri, in 1916. He was a prominent figure in country music, appearing regularly on KMOX/St. Louis' "Big Old Fashioned Barn Dance" from 1940 to 1943. Wood worked as a disc jockey on KTTR/Rolla for at least 18 years and hosted the live "Nashville Op'ry" at Lake Ozark during the 1960s. Tragically, he was blinded in a milk truck accident. He was the leader of the Missouri Swingsters, a group that included his nephew Ward Wood, Jr. on bass, Smokey Burd on steel guitar, Bob Hastings on electric guitar, Tommy Watson on banjo, and Dotty Minor on vocals.
