Ayuo Takahashi, born on October 19, 1960, in Tokyo, Japan, and raised in New York City, is a versatile composer, poet, lyricist, singer, and performer known for his mastery of plucked string instruments, including the guitar, bouzouki, Irish harp, and medieval instruments. He was an early member of Keiji Haino's band Fushitsusha. Since 1984, Ayuo has released solo albums on various labels, including Epic-Sony, JVC Victor, MIDI Records, Tzadik, Zipangu, Seoul Records, Belle Antique, FOA Records, and PSF Records. His music often draws inspiration from literary works, and he has composed numerous music-theater pieces. Throughout his career, Ayuo has collaborated with notable artists such as Peter Hammill, Ryuichi Sakamoto, members of The Pentangle, Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention, guitarist-composer Carlos Alomar, Jadranka Stojaković, and producers John Zorn and Bill Laswell, among many others.
