Azymuth is a Brazilian fusion jazz trio formed by keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami, percussionist Ivan "Mamão" Conti, and bassist Alex Malheiros. The trio emerged from the bossa nova and jazz scene in Rio de Janeiro, where they were active as live and session musicians, residing in the same bohemian block in Copacabana. They first recorded together in the late 1960s as Projeto III and later released an album of covers as Som Ambiente in 1972. That same year, they also recorded a 7" EP as a quartet featuring singer Fabiola. In 1973, they adopted the name Azymuth, inspired by a song by Marcos & Paulo Sérgio Valle, and backed Valle on his album Previsão Do Tempo. Their first album, initially titled Azimüth, was released in 1975 and included the hit "Linha Do Horizonte." They followed up with minor hits like "Melô Da Cuíca" in 1976 and "Jazz Carnival" in 1979, with "Dear Limmertz" becoming a staple in 1980. The trio relocated to the United States in the early 1980s, producing several albums that were not released in Brazil, and developed a unique sound they termed MPB-jazz, blending samba, funk, and jazz. After Bertrami left the group in 1988, he was replaced by Jota Moraes and Marinho Boff
