Baaba Maal, born on November 12, 1953, in Podor, is a renowned Senegalese singer, guitarist, and percussionist. Influenced by his friend and family griot, he dedicated himself to music, learning from his mother and his school's headmaster. He furthered his studies in music at the university in Dakar and pursued postgraduate studies on a scholarship at Beaux-Arts in Paris. Baaba primarily sings in Pulaar and is a leading promoter of the traditions of the Pulaar-speaking peoples residing on both sides of the Senegal River.
