Baby Washington is a soul vocalist born on November 13, 1940, in Bamberg, South Carolina, and raised in Harlem, New York. She began her career in 1956 as a member of the vocal group The Hearts before becoming a solo artist the following year. Washington recorded on Donald Shaw's label and achieved success with hits like "The Time" (U.S. R&B Top 30) and "The Bells" (U.S. R&B Top 20) in 1959, as well as "Nobody Cares" (U.S. R&B Top 20) in 1961. In 1962, she moved to another label and scored her only entry on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Top 40 with the song "That's How Heartaches Are Made" in 1963. Washington remains active as a live performer, making appearances several times a year on the East Coast.
