Bad Brains is an American Hardcore Punk band that originated in Washington, D.C. in 1977. Initially formed as a jazz fusion ensemble called Mind Power, the band is known for its diverse musical style, incorporating reggae, dub, funk, heavy metal, and hip hop elements. The classic line-up includes members who have contributed to the band's sound over the years. The lead vocalist from 1978 to 1987, and again in 1989–1990, 1994–1995, and 1998 to the present, also played guitar from 1977 to 1978. The guitarist from 1977 to 1995 and again from 1998 to the present, along with the bassist who has been with the band since its inception in 1977, and the drummer who played from 1977 to 1987, 1989–1990, 1994–1995, and 1998 to the present, complete the classic line-up. Over the years, the original line-up experienced multiple break-ups and line-up changes, with various musicians stepping in. This includes a lead vocalist from 1977 to 1978, Taj Singleton who sang from 1988 to 1989, and other vocalists who filled in from 1990 to 1994 and again in 2008.
