Bana, born Adriano Gonçalves in 1932 in Mindelo, Sao Vicente, Cape Verde, was a renowned Cape Verdean singer and the king of Morna, a traditional musical style of the country. He began his musical career during the period of Portuguese colonial rule, working as a handyman and bodyguard for the legendary Cabo Verdean composer and performer, B. Leza. Bana passed away on 13 July 2013 in Loures hospital, Portugal. Standing over seven feet tall, he left a significant mark on Cape Verdean music.
