Band Aid is an all-star group assembled to raise money for African famine relief. The group's iconic song "Do They Know It's Christmas?" was written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, recorded on November 25, 1984, and co-produced by Ure, who also mixed the 12" version. The single was released on December 3, 1984, quickly reaching number one and selling three million copies by the end of the year, breaking the previous UK sales record of 2.1 million held by Wings' "Mull Of Kintyre." All participants contributed their services for free, and even the vinyl was donated. The Band Aid Trust also benefited from the 1985 Live Aid concerts and two Sport Aid events, the latter featuring a tie-in single. In 1989, a new all-star cast recorded a version of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" which also became a number one hit, as did the 20-year anniversary version. Sleeve artist Peter Saville is also credited as a member of Band Aid.
