Banda Black Rio is a Carioca group formed in 1976, known for their unique blend of funk music, samba, and jazz, all with a strong dance music edge. Their success primarily stems from their first three albums, which feature a mix of original songs and Brazilian classics such as "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro" by Ary Barroso and "Casa Forte" by Edu Lobo. In 1978, they recorded a live album with Caetano Veloso titled "Bicho Baile Show," which remained unreleased until 2002. Often compared to U.S. soul and funk groups like Kool & The Gang and Earth Wind & Fire, Banda Black Rio played a significant role in developing Brazilian instrumental soul music, gaining popularity in English clubs by the late 1990s. The current members of the band are the sons of the original members.
