The Bar-Kays were formed in 1966 in Memphis, Tennessee, as a sextet backing group for Stax Records. They initially appeared poised for a successful career as a session band and recording outfit. However, tragedy struck when the backbone of the group was killed in a plane crash, along with the artist they were supporting on tour. Only Ben Cauley survived the crash, leading to the formation of what could be considered Bar-Kays Mark II. James Alexander, who was also an original member, was not on the plane due to limited seating. Along with Cauley, Alexander and new members Michael Toles, Willie Hall, Ronnie Gordon, and Harvey Henderson, the group recorded the track "Sang & Dance" in late 1969, marking one of their first releases as the reformed Bar-Kays.
