The Bar-Kays were formed in 1966 in Memphis, Tennessee, originally as a sextet backing group for Stax Records. They seemed poised for a successful career as both a session band and recording outfit. However, tragedy struck when most of the group was killed in a plane crash, along with Otis Redding, who had hired them as his backing band for a tour. Ben Cauley was the only survivor of the crash and went on to help form what could be called Bar-Kays Mark II. James Alexander, who was also an original member, was not on the plane due to limited seating. Along with Cauley, new members Michael Toles, Willie Hall, Ronnie Gordon, and Harvey Henderson joined the group. One of their first tracks as the new lineup was 'Sang & Dance,' recorded in late 1969.
