Barbara Dane was an American folk, blues, and jazz singer and guitarist, born on May 12, 1927, in Detroit. She passed away on October 20, 2024, in Oakland. Throughout her life, she was married three times, including to a folk singer with whom she had a son, Jesse Cahn, who is also a folk musician, and to Byron Menendez, with whom she had two children. Dane received acclaim from jazz critics, with one describing her as "in stereo." After opening for a notable musician in 1959, she was invited to appear on national television's Timex Jazz show. She toured the East Coast and performed in Chicago alongside various artists. Dane also made appearances as a solo guest artist on 's Tonight Show and participated in other national TV programs, including The Show, 's Stars of Jazz, Playboy, Penthouse, PM East/West, and Presents. In the early 1960s, she founded a blues and jazz club.
