Barry Brown (c. 1962, Jamaica - May 28, 2004) was a Jamaican reggae singer who gained prominence in the 1970s through his collaborations with producer Bunny Lee. Although his debut release, "Girl You're Always On My Mind," had limited impact, his vocal style quickly garnered popularity, leading to his first hit with "Step It Up Youthman" in 1979. This success resulted in an album of the same name released on Third World records. As one of the prominent artists of the early dancehall era, Brown collaborated with notable producers such as Linval Thompson, Winston "Niney The Observer" Holness, Sugar Minott, and Coxsone Dodd, while also producing his own material. Between 1979 and 1984, he released eleven albums, but his output became more sporadic in later years, though his work remained a staple on sound systems like those of Jah Shaka. In the 1990s, Brown faced health challenges, including asthma and substance abuse issues. He passed away in May 2004 at Sone Waves Recording Studio in Kingston, Jamaica, after falling and hitting his head.
