Battered Ornaments was an ambitious rock band formed in 1969 by lyricist Pete Brown, who was known for writing many songs for Cream alongside Jack Bruce. The band featured Brown on vocals and trumpet, along with Graham Layden (vocals), Chris Spedding (guitar), Charlie Hart (organ, violin), George Khan (sax), Butch Potter (bass), Rob Tait (drums), and Pete Bailey (percussion). The group released their debut album, A Meal You Can Shake Hands With in the Dark, and completed a second album, Mantelpiece, before Brown left due to a dispute with Spedding. Following Brown's departure, his vocals on Mantelpiece were replaced, and the band continued until Spedding left to pursue a solo career.
