Bear in Heaven began as a solo project by Jon Philpot in a studio in Atlanta, Georgia. After moving to New York, he found himself alone in his room, trying to create music while searching for a job. His journey took a turn when he met James Elliott, a friend of friends from Table of the Elements. They bonded over drinks and traveled to Europe with Presocratics. James later co-founded The Social Registry with Rich Zerbo, before leaving to make music as Ateleia. Around the same time, Sadek Bazarra moved to New York with his company GHAVA, and he and Jon connected over discussions about girls, art, and music. Adam Wills soon joined the group; he and Jon had previously worked together in Atlanta, and Adam quickly became well-connected in New York. As they formed a collective, Jon completed some songs, leading to the release of "Tunes Nextdoor to Songs," a short album by old friend Scott Herren. The excitement grew as they began to perform, with the group initially consisting of everyone except Joe Stickney and including guitarist David Daniell. Joe, an old friend of Adam’s who played drums with Paul Duncan, joined the lineup, while David departed. They started writing songs together, ultimately leading to the formation of Bear in Heaven.
