The Beastie Boys were an American hip hop band formed in New York in 1981, originally starting as a hardcore punk group. They gained recognition with their first hip hop track, "Cooky Puss," released in 1983, which marked their transition into a rap group, while still incorporating punk rock elements into their albums. The band operated their own label from 1992 to 2001. The Beastie Boys officially disbanded in June 2014, following the death of member Adam Yauch in 2012. The group's lineup included members Adam Yauch (vocals, bass) from 1981 until his death in 2012, Michael Diamond (vocals, drums) from 1981 to 2014, and a guitarist who played from 1982 to 2014. The band also had a guitarist who was part of the group from 1981 to 1982 and passed away in 2016, as well as a drummer who played from 1981 to 1984. In addition to the core members, the Beastie Boys had various touring members, including multiple disc jockeys and percussionists who contributed to their sound from the mid-1980s through the early 2010s.
