Beat Rhythm Fashion is a post-punk band from Wellington, formed in 1980 by brothers Dan and Nino Birch, who grew up in Hong Kong. They were part of the “Terrace Scene,” which was centered around large, old flats near Victoria University. The band signed with Mike Alexander’s Bunk label and released three well-received singles. However, a planned move to Australia did not materialize, and their last performance in New Zealand before reuniting was in August 1982 at Wellington’s Clyde Quay Tavern. Dan Birch passed away in 2011. In 2019, Nino Birch reformed Beat Rhythm Fashion with Caroline Easther and Rob Mayes from Failsafe Records, taking on bass duties. They released the album "Tenterhook" and performed live shows in New Zealand. Their next album, "Critical Mass," is scheduled for release in early 2024.
