Bell & James is a songwriting and disco soul funk duo of multi-instrumentalists from Philadelphia. They are connected to the Philly soul scene, as Bell's uncle was a prominent figure in the genre. The duo signed as songwriters at Mighty Three Music, a company co-owned by Bell's uncle. They began writing songs for various artists, including notable names in the industry. In early 1978, Bell & James were signed to A&M Records, where they released three albums that produced hits such as "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)," "You Never Know What You've Got," "Shakedown," and "Only Make Believe." After parting ways, both members engaged in extensive session work.
