Benjamin Ball, originally from Durban, moved to Johannesburg in 1980 to pursue his music career. Faced with challenges, he experienced homelessness for a few months, sleeping under bridges and in parks. His fortunes changed when he became the lead vocalist for the band Notty Dread, which released singles like "Crack," "Is it Love," and "Give the People What They Want." Benjamin then embarked on a solo career, debuting with "Flash A Flashlight," which garnered immense popularity, leading to an encore performance where he sang the hit five times due to the crowd's enthusiasm. The song quickly went gold, prompting him to release the album "Paulina," featuring hits such as "Soweto Tonite," "I Just Keep on Dancing," and "Paulina," all of which received significant radio play in the '80s in South Africa. Following "Paulina," he released singles like "Come to Me," "Lolita," and "Reggae Dancing," along with the hit "I Need It," which he wrote while waiting at an airport. He continued his musical journey with the album "Kabadzeene" and the reggae album "In The Jungle," both featuring songs written under his publishing company, Elsie Joseph, and engineered by Fab Grosso. In 1991, he released "Take A Chance," co-produced with Cyril Mnculwane and engineered by Humphrey Mabote, which included a flash mix of "Flash A Flashlight."
