**Benjamin Britten** Born: November 22, 1913, in Lowestoft, UK Died: December 4, 1976, in Aldeburgh, UK Benjamin Britten was a British composer, conductor, and pianist known for his significant contributions to 20th-century music. He showed early talent and gained public attention with his a cappella choral work *A Boy Was Born* in 1934. His international fame surged with the premiere of his opera *Peter Grimes* in 1945, after which he focused much of his compositional energy on operas, establishing himself as a leading figure in the genre. Britten's compositional interests were diverse, encompassing orchestral, choral, solo vocal (notably for tenor Peter Pears), chamber, instrumental, and film music. He was also dedicated to creating music for children and amateur performers and was recognized as a skilled pianist and conductor. One of his most significant works, *The War Requiem*, was completed on December 20, 1961, and premiered on May 30, 1962. Throughout his career, Britten received numerous accolades, including being named a Companion of Honour in 1952 and a member of the Order of Merit in 1965.
