Benny Soebardja is an Indonesian rock musician, born on July 4, 1949, and is considered one of the most important figures in the country's music scene. He began his career in 1966 as the guitarist and vocalist of a Bandung-based beat combo. Tired of covering songs from other bands like Cream, The Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix, he left to form his own group. Around 1972, he occasionally joined GPL (Group Pecinta Lagu) but the group disbanded after the death of a member. Following this, Benny formed another band called Lizard, which served as the backing for his solo outings. During his time with Lizard, the music evolved from a rockier style to a more ballad-oriented sound, incorporating acoustic guitars. British poet Bob Dook assisted with the English lyrics, enhancing their quality. Throughout his career, Benny Soebardja has also been recognized as a skilled electric guitarist.
