Bessie Banks, born Bessie White on February 8, 1938, in North Carolina, was raised in Brooklyn, New York. By the mid-1950s, she began her singing career with the vocal group the Turbans and later joined a quartet called Three Guys and a Doll, which eventually evolved into the Four Fellows, excluding her. One of the members of these groups was Larry Banks, whom Bessie married at the age of seventeen on stage at the Royal Theatre in Baltimore. Despite a relatively small recording career, Bessie has had a significant influence on soul music fans, particularly in the UK.
