Bessie Jones was a gospel singer born on February 8, 1902, in Smithville, Georgia. She passed away on July 17, 1984. Jones learned her music from her grandfather, a former slave who was born in Africa. She was a founding member of the Georgia Sea Island Singers. In 1959, she was first encountered during a southern trip, and two years later, she traveled to New York City to ask Alan Lomax to record both her music and biography.
