Beth Anderson is an American composer known for her work in classical, neo-romantic, avant-garde music, text-sound works, and musical theater. Born in 1950 in Lexington, Kentucky, she studied primarily in California with notable figures such as John Cage, Terry Riley, Robert Ashley, and Larry Austin at Mills College and the University of California at Davis. She holds both a Master of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts degree. In the mid-1970s, Anderson moved to New York City, where she married in 1995. She is most recognized for inventing swales, a musical form that utilizes collages and samples of newly composed music. Interestingly, she enjoyed listening to Megadeth while cleaning her apartment.
