Bettye Swann, born Betty Jean Champion on October 24, 1944, in Shreveport, Louisiana, is best known for her 1967 R&B chart-topper "Make Me Yours." Raised in Arcadia, Louisiana, she began singing locally with her high school friends as The Fawns. In 1963, she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a solo career and signed with an independent label. Her first release, 1963's “Don't Wait Too Long,” made it onto the national charts and was self-penned, featuring arrangements by a notable West Coast arranger. "Make Me Yours" reached #1 on the R&B chart in 1967 and became a favorite in both the UK's Northern Soul scene and the US Beach Music scene, later being covered by over a dozen other artists. Following her success with “Fall In Love With Me,” Bettye left Money Records in 1968 for Capitol Records, where her recordings drew on both Soul and Country Music. She scored a hit in 1969 with a version of “Don't Touch Me” and recorded a duet with a Country Music superstar, though it was shelved due to the inter-racial pairing. Her Capitol recordings gained belated acclaim in 2004 when re-released. After her time at Capitol, Bettye had singles released on various labels, producing records in both Southern Soul and Philadelphia-influenced styles. She achieved hits with “Victim of a Foolish Heart”
