B·F·G, formed in the summer of 1985 by drummer Mike Simmii (or Mike Simpkins), emerged after his tours with The Cult, New Order, and the Smiths as part of a Factory Records band. The lineup included a vocalist, a bassist, and Acky on guitar. The band gained attention when Joy Division and New Order bassist Pete Hook invited them to support New Order on their summer 1986 tour, coinciding with the release of their first single, "Paris." B·F·G's first headlining show in their hometown of Manchester featured the Stone Roses as support, and they were quickly compared to Joy Division for the intensity of their live performances. However, they developed a reputation for being "difficult" with the press, completing very few interviews during the late 80s and continuing to defy media conventions. The band's lineup changed for the "Western Sky" and "Higher" EPs, with new members replacing B.J. Williams and Acky on guitar. At this time, a future member of the Utah Saints was invited to join B·F·G. The band's sound evolved towards a more melodic 'dark wave' direction, culminating in their debut album, ‘Fathoms’, released in 1988.
