Big Band Katowice was formed in 1972 at the Department of Entertainment Music in Katowice, Poland, by Andrzej Zubek, who led the band until 1976. From 1976 to 1981, the band was directed by Prof. Zbigniew Kalemba, after which Andrzej Zubek resumed leadership from 1982 until 2012. Currently, the band is led by Dr. Grzegorz Nagórski. The Big Band serves as a showcase for the Jazz Institute and the entire University, providing an excellent workshop for aspiring soloists, orchestral musicians, and arrangers. Its high standards are evidenced by invitations to perform at numerous international concerts in countries such as Germany, France, the United States, and former Czechoslovakia.
