Big Black was an American punk rock band from Evanston, Illinois, active from 1981 to 1987. Founded by singer and guitarist Steve Albini, the original lineup included guitarist Santiago Durango and bassist Jeff Pezzati, both members of Naked Raygun. In 1985, Pezzati was replaced by Dave Riley. The band's music was known for its aggressive and abrasive sound, featuring distinctively clanky guitars and the use of a drum machine instead of a traditional drum kit. Their lyrics challenged societal taboos, addressing politically and culturally charged topics such as murder, rape, child sexual abuse, arson, racism, and misogyny. Although the lyrics contained controversial material, they were intended as commentary or expressions of distaste for the subject matter. Big Black was critical of the commercial aspects of rock music, rejecting the mainstream music industry and maintaining complete control over their career. They independently booked their tours, financed their recordings, refused to sign contracts, and avoided many conventional corporate elements associated with rock bands.
