**Big Boy Groves** Real Name: Ervin Groves Jr. Born: January 20, 1927, Oklahoma Died: July 21, 1982, age 55 Big Boy Groves was a talented pianist, arranger, and composer, known for his contributions to the music scene in the 1950s and beyond. After serving in the Army band, where he organized a special service band in Japan, Groves became a bandleader and songwriter. He recorded for several labels, including Money Records, Spark, Vita, and Dolphin, and achieved notable success with songs like "Big Boy's Bounce" and "You Can't Beat the Horses." Growing up in La Jolla, California, Groves pursued both music and art, studying at the La Jolla Art Institute and San Diego City College before moving to Westlake College of Music in Hollywood. He spent years performing in Guam and Hawaii, where he led the house band at the Royal Lahaina Hotel and produced cartoon books such as *The Funny Side of Hawaii* and *The Funny Side of Las Vegas*. In Hawaii, he wrote and arranged the album *Composer in Paradise*, which included the song "Welcome to Paradise," recorded by his daughter Lani.
