"Big Dan" Starr, born Estle Don Linebarger in Missouri in 1937, was a lead singer known for his vibrant musical identity. As a teenager, he performed on local radio and played in a hillbilly band called the Ozark String Dusters. In the late 1950s, he joined the Army, where he played in a serviceman's band alongside Tommy Cash, Johnny Cash's brother. Linebarger began writing music as a teen, copyrighting his first song in the mid-1950s, and released several singles between 1968 and 1973, including a UFO conspiracy anthem titled "Captain Tom Martell" and a patriotic song called "Bugle Boy," dedicated to Vietnam War-era POWs. He played clubs in Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware, and led a group called the Rustlers, which he later renamed the Hometowners. Eventually, he moved to Florida, where he established himself as a bandleader and television host, fronting a group known as the Hometowners USA. Linebarger passed away in 2004.
