Big John K began his musical journey at the age of five, singing in church and teaching himself to play the piano. His performing career took off in Dayton, Ohio around 1957, where he shared the stage with Ray Charles and several members of Count Basie's band. In the late 1950s, he recorded approximately twenty songs, although only six singles were released. He later changed his name to Johnny K and signed with Epic Records in 1969. During his career, he performed alongside notable artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, and B.J. Thomas, and he even opened for Jimi Hendrix. However, he left Epic Records in 1971.
