Big Maybelle was an American jazz and rhythm & blues singer, born on May 1, 1924, in Jackson, Tennessee. She began her singing career in 1936 and continued until 1944. Maybelle made her first recordings for King Records in 1947 and subsequently recorded for OKeh from 1952 to 1955, Savoy from 1956 to 1959, and for Brunswick/Rojac in the mid-1960s. Unfortunately, she became mostly inactive in music due to illness in the late 1960s. Big Maybelle passed away from a diabetic coma on January 23, 1972, in Cleveland, Ohio.
