Bill Haley & His Comets were an American rock and roll band founded in 1952, continuing until the death of their leader, Bill Haley, on February 9, 1981. The band was also known by various names, including Bill Haley and the Comets and Bill Haley's Comets. Over the years, more than 100 musicians performed with the group. The original lineup, known as the First Comets, included Bill Haley on vocals and guitar, a pianist and accordion player from 1952 to 1962, a steel guitar player from 1952 to 1964, a string bass player from 1952 to 1955, a tenor saxophonist from 1953 to 1955, a drummer from 1953 to 1955, a saxophonist from 1955 to 1975, a double bass player from 1955 to 1958, and another drummer from 1955 to 1960. Frank "Franny" Beecher served as the lead guitarist from 1955 to 1962. The band also utilized session musicians, including a drummer from 1953 to 1955 and an electric guitarist from 1952 to 1954.
