Bill Haley & His Saddlemen was formed in the mid-1940s after Bill Haley left a Country & Western group in 1946. Upon returning to Philadelphia, he formed his own band, which gained local popularity. The earliest releases of the Saddlemen were on a label held by Miller, who later launched a new label in 1951 and suggested renaming the band to "Bill Haley and the Saddlemen." The group began to perform and record R&B tunes and early Pop Rock & Roll, alongside Western Swing numbers. Miller eventually proposed another name change to "Bill Haley and His Comets," inspired by Halley's Comet. The band included former members Bill Haley, Al Rex, Billy Williamson, and Johnny Grande, with other artists such as Al Constantine, Barney Banard, and Tex King also playing with the Saddlemen.
