Bill Parsons, born on September 8, 1934, in Crossville, Tennessee, USA, was a friend of country singer Bobby Bare. Before entering the US Army, Bare agreed to help Parsons, who was just leaving the service, make a record. Due to a mix-up at Fraternity Records, the 1959 single titled "The All American Boy," co-written by Parsons and Bare (under the pseudonym Orville Lunsford), was credited to Parsons, although it featured Bare's vocals. The song reached number 2 on the US pop charts while Parsons watched from the sidelines. As Bare had not yet gained recognition in country music, this deception continued for one other single, which did not chart. Bare later reverted to his real name and began a successful country music career in 1962. Bill Parsons, however, retired from the music business after recording two unsuccessful singles for Starday Records in 1960.
