Billy Joel is an American singer/songwriter and pianist, born on May 9, 1949, in the Bronx, New York. He moved to the Levittown section of Hicksville, Long Island, New York, where he began playing piano at the age of 4. In 1964, inspired by the Beatles, he formed his first band, "The Echoes," which later changed its name to "The Lost Souls" in 1965 and then to "The Emerald Lords" in 1966. In 1967, he joined a band and recorded two albums that did not achieve success. He then formed a psychedelic duo with the drummer of The Hassles and released one unsuccessful album. In 1971, Billy Joel launched his solo career with the album "Cold Spring Harbour" and gained fame in 1973 with his hit song "Piano Man." He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 as a performer.
