Billy MacKenzie (27 March 1957 - 22 January 1997) was a Scottish musician born in Dundee, United Kingdom. He formed the band Associates with Alan Rankine in the late 1970s, gaining acclaim with their first release, a cover of David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging." The duo produced several celebrated albums and singles until their split in 1982, after which the group continued under the name The Associates, with various line-ups featuring Billy on vocals and as the primary songwriter until the group's dissolution in 1991. Throughout the 1980s, Billy released singles under various names, including MacKenzie Sings Orbidoig, Holger Hiller Featuring Billy MacKenzie, and BEF Featuring Billy MacKenzie, and contributed vocals to artists such as Skids and Yello. His first solo work came in 1992 with the album "Outernational" and several singles. He continued to collaborate with artists like Yello, Peach, Barry Adamson, Apollo Four Forty, Loom, and Siobhan Fahey. Tragically, after completing work on what would have been his comeback album for Nude Records, Billy MacKenzie took his own life in 1997 at the age of 39 in Auchterhouse, Sidlaw Hills, near Dundee.
