Blue Aeroplanes is an English indie rock band formed in 1981 in Bristol by brothers Gerard and John, along with dancer Wojtek, who were previously members of a short-lived punk band. The band's name, Blue Aeroplanes, is derived from the Polish phrase "Niebieske Samoloty," which was initially intended to be the name of Wojtek's brother's band. The band is known for its ever-changing lineup, which, as of 2016, includes 41 ex-members, a record only surpassed by another unnamed group. Gerard, John, and Wojtek have been the only consistent members since the band's formation, although John left the band between 1990 and 2004 to serve as the drummer for another band during that time. Former and current members of Blue Aeroplanes have gone on to join various other musical acts. In live performances, the band typically concludes their sets with the song "Breaking In My Heart," often featuring multiple guest guitarists on stage to play the main riff. Notably, during the early 1990s, when they were tour support, they had a total of 15 guitarists performing simultaneously. Additionally, it is said that R.E.M.'s famous song "Losing My Religion" was inspired by Gerard.
