Bob Downes is an avant-garde jazz flautist and saxophonist born on July 22, 1937, in Plymouth, England. He began his musical career in the late 1960s and 1970s, collaborating with various artists and bands. In 1968, he formed his own group, a trio that featured many different musicians and released a series of LPs on his own record label. Throughout his career, Downes recorded and performed with notable jazz bands and artists, including Ray Russell's Rock Workshop and Barry Guy's London Jazz Composer's Orchestra. He has also composed and performed for numerous contemporary dance companies, including The Royal Ballet, The London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Ballet Rambert, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and The Royal Canadian Ballet. Additionally, Downes has contributed to theatre, television, and international poetry festivals. He moved to Germany in 1980.
