Bobby Taylor (born February 18, 1934, in Washington, D.C., USA - died July 22, 2017, in Hong Kong, China) was an American soul singer, songwriter, and producer, active primarily during the 1960s and 1970s. Raised in New York City, he sang in local doo-wop groups as a young man. In 1958, he was a member of a group that released several locally-selling recordings in the Columbus, Ohio area. In the early 1960s, while in San Francisco, Taylor met other musicians, and with him as the lead singer, they eventually became known as Bobby Taylor And The Vancouvers, based in Vancouver, Canada. This act joined Motown and released an LP titled "Bobby Taylor And The Vancouvers" in 1968, which included a top 30 single in 1969. In July 1968, Taylor's group opened for The Jackson 5 in Chicago, and he was impressed with them, personally bringing the group to Motown. After they signed with Motown in March 1969, Taylor became the group's first producer and oversaw much of their first album. Later in California, after the Jackson 5 were relocated, Taylor briefly joined them, although he did not receive credit for his work on their early singles.
