Bobby Taylor (February 18, 1934 - July 22, 2017) was an American soul singer, songwriter, and producer, known for his work primarily in the 1960s and 1970s. Born in Washington, D.C., he was raised in New York City, where he sang in local doo-wop groups during his youth. In 1958, he was a member of a group that released a few locally-selling recordings in Columbus, Ohio. In the early 1960s, Taylor moved to San Francisco, where he met other musicians and formed a band that eventually became known as Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, based in Vancouver, Canada. They joined Motown Records and released an LP titled "Bobby Taylor And The Vancouvers" in 1968, which included a top 30 single in 1969. In July 1968, during a show in Chicago, Taylor's group opened for The Jackson 5. Impressed by their talent, he personally brought them to Motown, where they signed in March 1969. Taylor became the first producer for The Jackson 5 and oversaw much of their debut album. Although he briefly joined them in California, he did not receive credit for his contributions to their early singles.
