Bola Sete was a Brazilian guitarist born on July 16, 1923, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He studied guitar in Brazil and performed locally as well as in Italy. Sete moved to the USA, where he played in the Sheraton hotel chain and was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie in New York. Gillespie introduced him to the 1962 Monterey Jazz Festival, marking Sete's breakthrough. He later settled in San Francisco and formed his own trio, performing at the 1966 Monterey Jazz Festival. In the 1980s, Sete battled lung cancer and passed away on February 14, 1987, in Greenbrae, California, due to complications from the disease and pneumonia.
